A mobile phone operator gave his IP address to Pune police

He is fighting to get compensation from company

BANGALORE: He was one among the many youth in Bangalore engaged in the software sector. His life revolved around his work at an Information Technology (IT) major, and his interest in cricket.

But Lakshman Kailash's small world came crashing down when policemen from Pune arrested him for a crime he never committed.

Mr. Kailash was taken to Pune, where he spent seven days in lock-up and 43 days in Yerwada Jail.

A private mobile phone operator had given his IP address to Pune police following a complaint regarding a "derogatory blog" on Maratha king Chhatrapathi Shivaji, on Orkut.

The real offenders have now been caught, and Mr. Kailash has been released from prison.

His employers, who stood by him through his ordeal, have relocated him to Chennai.

He intends to carry on his fight to get compensation from the private mobile phone operator.

"It is their communication which led to my arrest and the 50 days of incarceration," he says.

During a chat with The Hindu on the High Court of Karnataka premises on Saturday, Mr. Kailash relived his "dark" days in jail.

He had come there to consult his lawyer for initiating action against the mobile phone operator. Mr. Kailash said that on August 30 last, he had gone to sleep after watching a cricket match, in which India was playing, till 3 a.m. Five hours later, he was woken up by eight policemen from Pune, at his residence on Airport Road.

Ordeal

Even before Mr. Kailash could gather his wits and ask them what wrong he had done, the police began firing questions at him and "searched" his computer.

He was told that they had received a communication from the Bangalore office of the mobile phone firm saying that the "derogatory text" on Orkut against Chhatrapathi Shivaji had come from his IP address.

Unable to comprehend what the police were talking about, he contacted his brother who stayed near Hebbal.

But the police refused to believe that he was innocent. They took him to the airport police station, and then to Pune by road.

Mr. Kailash said that he had reached Pune on September 1, and had to spend seven days in "filthy" lock-ups at two police stations there.

The bail application he filed on the eighth day of his stay there was rejected by a magistrate, and he was sent to Yerwada Jail. With bed bugs for company, sound sleep was out of the question in the jail, and it was difficult to have jail food, he said.

With 200 undertrial prisoners packed in one of the wards, Mr. Kailash said that they had to sleep with hands on their chest.

He said he had refrained from telling the inmates the reason for being jailed.

The Pune police had told him that he would land in trouble if he told others that he had made "derogatory" references to Chhatrapathi Shivaji.

Jail life was a nightmare that Mr. Kailash still cannot forget. What is more annoying is the fact that he is not even remotely connected to the "crime" for which he was picked up.

Life in a high-security jail with hardened criminals was never easy, he said. The "blog" on Orkut seems to have changed Mr. Kailash's life forever. He says that his family and friends have been helpful and encouraged him to start life anew.

He is determined to see that others do not suffer the fate he has.

He wants to ensure that adequate safeguards are put in place so that nobody is punished for a crime he has not committed.

XI'AN: The first China-made regional aircraft Modem Ark (MA)600 was completed on Sunday, marking a milestone in the nation's drive to be one of the world's leading providers of turboprop regional aircraft.

The research and development of the 70-seat MA700 was also under way, head of the preparation group for the China Aviation Industry Group Corporation Lin Zuomin announced at the Xi'an Aircraft Industry(Group) Company Ltd.

The 60-seat MA600, an improved version of the MA60, was 300 kg lighter, making it 40 per cent more fuel efficient than turbofan-powered aircraft, said president of the Xi'an company Meng Xiangkai.

Improvements were also made in the power system, cabin design and flight capacities.

After five years, China would be able to deliver its own turbo-prop regional jet series of the MA60, MA600, MA700, said Mr. Lin. The country would strive for a bigger market share comparable to its rivals, Canada's Bombardier and France's ATR, he said.

The MA600 was scheduled to make its maiden flight in September, and early promotion activities had attracted interest from many carriers. The main marketing drive would begin next year 2009.

The Beijing Youth Daily has reported that 10 to 15 MA600s would be manufactured in the next two years. Up to 30 a year could be made according to market demand. Mass production would start in late 2009.

Company officials could give no information on the cost of the aircraft. The China Aerospace Industry Research Center forecast 5,300 to 5,500 regional aircraft would be needed in the next 20 years, of which 1,900 would be turboprop aircraft. Turbo propeller regional aircraft are commonly used on short and medium range flights. Nearly half of the regional jets flying in Europe and North America are turbo-propelled. The demand for the relatively environment-friendly aircraft is expected to rise. The MA60, with a maximum speed of 514 km/h and a range of 2,450 km or four hours, was first tested in 1993 and approved in June 2000 for passenger services.

32 constables missing after naxalite attack

VISAKHAPATNAM: Thirty two Greyhound constables of the Andhra Pradesh police were missing and 10 injured after the banned CPI (Maoist) attacked a motor launch carrying a police team in the Chitrakonda reservoir in Orissa, close to the Andhra Pradesh border, on Sunday morning.

The place is about 30 km. from the Sileru power station.

The launch, carrying 62 officers and constables, capsized when those on board tried to counter the attack. A large number of policemen were engaged in the rescue operation, said Director General of Police S.S.P. Yadav late in the evening.

The Maoists were observing a protest week from June 26 against the Central government-led "oppression and elimination" methods and the steep hike in prices of commodities.

The incident occurred around 10.30 a.m. when the Greyhound team was returning after a joint operation with the Orissa police. The naxalites opened fire from all sides, said Superintendent of Police of Visakhapatnam Akun Sabharwal, who rushed to Chitrakonda on hearing the news, and SP of Malkangiri in Orissa Satish Kumar Gajbhiye, when contacted by The Hindu.

Three of the injured constables — Srinivasa Raju, Rambabu and Md. Khaza Mia — were brought here by a Navy helicopter. It is said they had to remain in water for a long time before reaching the shore.

According to some reports, the attack was carried out by the Andhra Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee's State Military Committee, which recently held training sessions in Orissa.

The Interview Part - 1

This is Prasad, Recently I have been selected as a panel member for Kendriya Vidyalaya -2 (KVNo2). I was selected as a Subject Expert for Computers.

Now I am Going to write my experience form "THE INTERVIEW" as a series.

PART - I

I was told to come to the School at the earliest possible on 19th of June 2008, the interviews were scheduled to start at 10:00 AM IST. Hence I started at my home by 8:00 AM, I have been residing in the Durgapuram, Vijayawada for the last 5 years. so it was very near for me to go to the Satyanarayanapuram (STPM) Railway quarters Bus stop.

To reach the school there only one bus route from stpm and it was 14s. no sooner I arrived at the bus stop, the bus arrived. I boarded it and asked the conductor whether the bus will go to the KVNo 2 and took a ticket of Rs 7/-. The conductor Informed me that there were interviews being conducted today and asked me whether I was going for the interview. I told him I was, but as a panel member.

It took around 45 minutes for the bus to reach the school. The bus stopped right in front of the Main gate of the school. the movement I arrived only one watchwomen (lady gaurd) was found, she told me to sign the register of the visitors. The buildings were quite far i had to gasp to reach there. As i entered the building I saw only one candidate. later I went right to the principals office and introduced myself. I was offered to take a seat. later I was offered some breakfast and tea. soon the clock struck 10'o Clock, till then the chairman have not arrived there, so the principal rangup the phone and reminded him. He arrived at 10:30 AM.

The PANEL

The panel meeting started as soon as the Chairman arrived. Each of us were given a file in which there is a sheet of the Applied Candidates and Some Score Sheets. As the interview is open type and walk-in, we were expecting more candidates than that of in the list.

The Rules
---------------
This interviews were being conducted to recruit part/full time teachers base on contract basis for 1 year. The pay rates are for PGT Rs 70/-, Senior Rs 80/-, and CGT Rs 90/- and for the computer Rs 100/- per period. We were informed to disqualify all those who apply for the same post who have already worked the previous year at the same school.

The score sheet has 8 columns. other than candidate name all the remaining fields are marks which we decided based on various criteria. they are : Educational Qualification, Professional Qualification, Presentation Skills, Personality, Knowledge.

'Lage Raho Munnabhai’ best popular film

NEW DELHI: The 54th National Film Awards for 2006 were announced here on Tuesday with Malayalam film "Pulijanmam" by director Priyanandanan being selected as the best feature film.

The best actor award was bagged by actor Soumitra Chatterjee for his role in the Bengali film "Podokkhep," while Priyamani won the best actress award for her role in Tamil film "Paruthi Veeran."

The award for the best director has gone to Madhur Bhandarkar for his Hindi film "Traffic Signal."

Bollywood super-hit film "Lage Raho Munnabhai" by director Raj Kumar Hirani has been adjudged the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment. The film has won the award for revalidating the philosophy of non-violence in a strife-torn world and helping rediscover the Gandhi within the common man. The film also won awards in the best screenplay and best lyrics category.

The awards were announced at a press conference organised here by the Directorate of Film Festivals and the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

Dilip Prabhavalkar won the best supporting actor award for his role in "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and Marathi film "Shevri," Konkona Sen Sharma won the best supporting actress award for her role in "Omkara" and Divya Chahadkar bagged the best child artist award for her role in Konkani film "Antarnad."

While announcing the awards, the jury members pointed out that the latest requirement for film entries to have censorship certificate had prevented several applicants from entering the competition this year.

"Too much censorship will stifle creativity and that is not something we want," said non-feature film jury chairman K. Bikram Singh.

Feature films chairman Buddhadeb Dasgupta added: "We want young film-makers with news ideas to come up and this can be done only with the help of the government and we hope that due support will be given."

Directors Madhu Kaithapuram and Kabir Khan bagged the Indira Gandhi Award for the best first film of a director for their films "Eakantham" (Malayalam) and "Kabul Express" (Hindi) respectively.

The Nargis Dutt Award for the best feature film on national integration was bagged by Kannada film "Kallarli Huvagi."

Two new award categories — best animation and best make-up artist — have been constituted this year. Telugu film "Kittu" won the award in the best animation film category and Anil Moti Ram Palande was awarded the best make-up artist for the film "Traffic Signal."

Awards in the other categories include — best playback singer Gurdas Mann for "Waris Shah Ishq Da Waris" (Punjabi), while the award for the best female playback singer was bagged by Aarti Anklekar Tikekar for "Antarnad" (Konkani).

The Special Jury Award-2006 was awarded to Vishal Bhardwaj for the film "Omkara" for an outstanding film that synergises international treatment with an earthy rooted sensibility.

The award for the best feature film in Hindi has gone to "Khosla ka Ghosla" for portraying the middle class struggle against the real estate mafia.

The best non-feature film award was given to "Bishar Blues," a film that has demolished the myth that the practice of Islam is monolithic and not multifaceted. The best first non-feature film of a director was awarded to Jacob Varghese for his film "Andhiyum."

The national award for the best writing on cinema was awarded to Jerry Pinto. He won the award for the best book on cinema for "Helen: The Life and Times of an H-Bomb".

The award for the best film critic will be presented jointly to G.P. Ramachandran (Malayalam) and Rafique A. R. Baghdadi (English) and the jury has made a special mention of Utpal Datta (Assamese) for his sensitive interpretation of films and trends in cinema.

Lal donning the role of fisherman

Superstar Mohanlal is getting ready to don the role of a fisherman in Maha Samudram directed by Janardhanan. The role of Izahak is likely to be a break in his career spanning 27 years.

Lal is teaming up with Janardhanan and G.Suresh Kumar who have produced many of his earlier hits including Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Vishnu Lokam and Aaram Thampuran and hopes to hit it off doing a novel character.

Unlike the 350-odd films that Lal has done, Maha Samudram has something unique. Izahak is no superhuman. He is just another seafarer that one comes across in any of the fishermen's hamlets in Kerala, says Dr. Janardhanan.

"Maha Samudram is all about the love, hatred, romance, rivalry and ego clashes of a group of people who live in the coastal belt.

"Many films featuring the life of fishermen have been made earlier too. But all those were confined to their lives on shore.

"I am focussing on the adventures of Izahak in the high seas. And the sea assumes itself the role of an important character in the film. Tales of strife, rescue, desolation and success, which are intertwined with the larger battle with waves, are featured. At the same time, it is far from being just a documentation of lives of fishermen," he says.

"It is really exciting that Lal is being cast as a fisherman in my next film and it is the first time that he is doing one such," says Suresh Kumar.

"The focus of the story is on two fishing hamlets whose other passion is football," he says.

This is the maiden film from Janardhanan, who had earlier written and directed many television serials.

After being active in amateur theatre for the past 18 years, Janardhanan has taken Ph.D on thematic and theatrical activities in Indian theatre.

Alappuzha is the main location of the film where Amaram - which won Mammootty his second national award - was shot.

Amaram too centred on the life of the fishermen community.

"But the plot has been built up in such a way that it does not resemble in any way either Amaram or Chemmeen. While Amaram was all about paternal affection and Chemmeen a thrust on romance, I am focussing on the life of one character, and through him the life and aspirations of a community at large," says Janardhanan.

Songs by Girish Puthencherry and M.Jayachandran will have the elements of folklore with special accent on melody.

The shooting is scheduled to begin in October.

Nayantara teams up with Karthi

The year 2008 saw remakes such as Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Santosh Subramanium making it big at the box office. Malayalam movie Katha Parayumbol is now being remade as Kuselan,starring Rajnikant.

According to the latest buzz in the industry, the next movie in the remake line is Malayalam superhit Meesa Madhavan, directed by Lal Jose. To be directed by Prabhakaran, the movie will feature Paruthiveeran-fame Karthi and Nayantara in the lead. It is said to hit the floors after Nayantara finishes her current movies Sathyam and Aegan, and Karthi his Ayirathil Oruvan.

Rajni's new hairstyle The superstar is almost done with his part in Kuselan and is all set to work on his next magnum opus Robot, a joint venture of Ayngaran International and Eros International. Expectations are high, as Rajnikant, for the first time, will be starring opposite Aishwarya Rai.

According to industry sources, director Shankar and Rajini will fly to the U.S. to finalise the make-up for the latter. It is said that in Robot Rajni will look younger and sport a different hairstyle. Also, the Robot team intends to engage Hollywood professionals to work on Rajni's make-up.

Baazigar in Tamil Bollywood hit Baazigar, which catapulted Shah Rukh Khan to fame, is all set to be remade in Tamil by director P. Vasu. Vasu's son Shakti will play the lead. The film will hit the floors after the Rajni-starrer Kuselan is completed. The Hindi original, directed by Abbas-Mastan, had Shah Rukh playing a negative role and also starred Kajol, Shilpa Shetty and Dalip Tahil.

Vasu launched Shakti in 2007 amid much fanfare in Thottaal Poo Malarum. But the movie didn't do well because of an insipid storyline and listless performances. The next Shakti-starrer, Mahesh, Saranya Mattrum Palar, is due for release early June.

My first break -- Bhavna

How it happened

I was in Plus One when a family friend gave my photograph to Malayalam director Kamal who asked me to meet him the very next day. When I went, he put me through a test shoot. The film was Nammal; it had two heroines (Renuka Menon and I) and two heroes (Siddharth and Jishnu). On the first day of the shoot itself, I began to cry. This was mainly because they painted me with black makeup. Till then, I was under the impression that in cinema one would be shown as fair as possible and that I would look beautiful on screen. Director Kamal tried to convince me, saying when Revathi acted in her first film in Malayalam, she too looked dark. But she won numerous hearts with her makeup and acting. True to his word, when the film was released, it was a big hit and won various awards, particularly the new face award for me. In Tamil, my first film was Chithiram Pesuthadi.

How it felt

It was sudden fame I got following my first film, both in Malayalam and Tamil. Both were a success at the box office. In fact, everybody liked to talk to me about them. The next few films enhanced my popularity. After Chithiram Pesuthadi, it was Deepavali and Veyil — both were much talked about. I was happy to do good films and make a mark in the Tamil film industry. But the best is yet to come from me.

How life changed

Life has changed a lot. I am not able to go shopping unescorted in Kerala or in Tamil Nadu. I am not happy about it, as I have not yet achieved much. My aim is to get unforgettable roles and portray them to the satisfaction of the audience. I have got good offers in different languages and I am ready to do more challenging roles. I hope this year and the coming one will be good for me.
